Level: Level 7: Fractions & Decimals
Topic: Basic decimal concepts
Description:
Decimals are another way to represent parts of a whole, just like fractions. Instead of using a numerator and denominator, decimals use a point (called a decimal point) to separate the whole number part from the fractional part. The digits to the right of the decimal point represent smaller parts of a whole, such as tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
For example, the number 0.5 means "five-tenths" or "half" of a whole. The 5 is in the tenths place, and it shows that there are 5 out of 10 equal parts.
Example 1:
The number 0.3 means "three-tenths." If you have a pizza that is divided into 10 slices and you eat 3 of them, you have eaten 0.3 (or 3 out of 10) of the pizza.
Example 2:
The number 0.75 means "seventy-five hundredths" or "three-quarters." If you have a chocolate bar divided into 100 small pieces, and you eat 75 of them, you have eaten 0.75 of the chocolate bar.
Decimals are useful because they allow us to represent parts of a whole in a more precise way. We use them every day when we measure, buy things, or talk about money!
